It seems we weren’t the only ones showing some praise for Single Dads! During President Obama’s usual radio and internet address this weekend, he talked about his own father’s absence and the heroism of single parents. “I never really knew my own father. I was raised by a single mom and two wonderful grandparents who made incredible sacrifices for me. And there are single parents all across the country who do a heroic job raising terrific kids,” he said. “Being a good parent – whether you’re gay or straight; a foster parent or a grandparent – isn’t easy. It demands your constant attention, frequent sacrifice, and a healthy dose of patience. And nobody’s perfect. To this day, I’m still figuring out how to be a better husband to my wife and father to my kids.”
Parenthood is, without a doubt, the toughest job in the world. But luckily there are some pretty amazing single fathers out there blazing the trails. Here are some single dads worthy of emulation:
1. Lenny Kravitz – the rocker and father of 23-year-old daughter, Zoe, is a supportive parent. Kravitz has been quoted as saying, “Watching my daughter grow up is the highlight of everything.”
2. Ricky Martin – the singer and single father of twin boys says he’s the one who changes the diapers, feeds them, bathes them and puts them to sleep. Martin says he wants to raise his children with honesty and love, giving them self-esteem and a lot of acceptance.
3. Usher Raymond – after a drawn-out custody battle with his ex, Usher was awarded primary custody of the couple’s two sons. Usher says parenting is a gift that makes him more conscious of everything around him. Usher adds, “I’ve never known passion like what my children have helped me feel.”
4. Colin Farrell – actor and father of two boys, Farrell’s eldest son suffers from a rare form of cerebral palsy called Angelman Syndrome. Farrell works tirelessly to raise public awareness of the genetic disorder but says that he’s never thought of his son as being someone with a disability, he’s just dedicated to helping his son reach his own individual potential and be as happy as he can be.
